The Vietnamese Prime Minister has approved a new List of important national and key programs, works and projects in the energy sector, planning to build at least 60.3 GW of new capacity over the 2025-35 period, with around three quarters of fossil fuel-fired projects (Nangluong Vietnam, 03/12/2025).
It includes 18 LNG-fired plant with a total capacity of 30.2 GW, which should be commissioned between 2028 and 2035, a 1.2 GW coal-fired plant, scheduled to be operational by 2027. The plan foresees the construction of over 12 GW of gas-fired project, as well as two nuclear plants (2-3.2 GW each), with an expected startup date between 2030 and 2035. In addition, the country plans to build 10 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 5.2 GW by 2027-35 and two offshore wind project totalling 7 GW by 2035.
The country’s total capacity amounts to 89.7 GW (2024), including 26.6 GW of coal, 23.7 GW of hydropower, 18.7 GW of solar, 8.3 GW of gas, 6.2 GW of wind, and 5.7 GW of oil, according to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research. Installed capacity tripled between 2010 (26 GW) and 2020 (78 GW) and has increased by 12 GW since then.
