Victoria plans to launch a 2 GW offshore wind tender in August 2026

The Australian state of Victoria will open an offshore wind tender in August 2026 for an initial 2 GW of capacity, according to a statement by the Victorian state government on 27 January 2026.

Victoria had originally planned to launch its first offshore wind tender in September 2025, but the process was postponed. The state government said the delay was due to several factors, including setbacks in the approval of feasibility licences, the rejection of the initial referral for the Port of Hastings, and broader global uncertainty.

The auction will be conducted under the proposed Electricity Services Entry Mechanism (ESEM), agreed between federal and state energy ministers, to advance Victoria’s ambitious plans to replace coal-fired generation with offshore wind, primarily in the Gippsland region.

Victoria is the only Australian state with a dedicated offshore wind target, aiming to have 2 GW installed by 2032, 9 GW by 2040 and 13 GW in 2050. At the national level, Australia targets renewables to account for 82% of the power mix by 2030.
