The Australian state of Victoria has announced the expansion of its renewable energy zones in its latest transmission plan. Victoria’s 2025 Transmission Plan (VTP) outlines the parts of the state designated as renewable energy zones and the new transmission infrastructure needed in the next 15 years to connect them to the grid, and its latest version has expanded by 200,000 ha the planned development zones (from 1.66 to 1.88 million ha, or about 7.9% of the state’s land area) for solar, battery and wind developments across six proposed renewable energy zones.
The VTP expects to add by 2040 between 5.7 and 9.6 GW of onshore wind, 9 GW of offshore wind, 2.3 and 8.9 GW of large-scale solar and 4.8 and 7.7 GW of short and long duration BESS capacity.
The plan is aligned with the state’s targets to reach 65% of its energy mix coming from renewable energies by 2030 and 95% by 2035.
Australia aims to reach 82% of renewable energy in the national grid by 2030.
