The government of the Australian state of Victoria has unveiled new offshore wind targets, seeking to start offshore wind generation as soon as 2028 and to reach 2 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040. New offshore wind capacity could help fill the supply gap when existing coal-fired power plants shut down.
The state of Victoria already aims to cover 50% of its power generation with renewables by 2030. It has 7.4 GW of onshore wind capacity and it is the first state in Australia to have an offshore wind project planned off its coasts, namely the 2.2 GW Star of the South project in federal waters. The state is estimated to have a significant offshore wind potential, enabling the development of 13 GW by 2050.
