The Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has been confirmed as the preferred wind turbine supplier for BadaEnergy’s 504 MW Ulsan Gray Whale 3 floating offshore wind project, which will be located off the coast South Korea. Vestas will provide 33 units of the V236-15.0 MW wind turbine to be installed on floating foundations. BadaEnergy, a joint venture between Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and SK ecoplant developing a portfolio of offshore wind projects in South Korea., has also selected Hyundai Heavy Industries as the preferred bidder for the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) of the Gray Whale 3 floating offshore wind project.
The Ulsan floating offshore wind cluster of Gray Whale 1, 2 and 3 projects will be a 1.5 GW complex located about 60 km east of Ulsan (southern South Korea). Construction is planned to start in 2025, while commercial operation is scheduled for 2028.
At the end of 2022, offshore wind accounted for less than 1% of South Korea’s installed capacity (136 MW). South Korea has set a target to reach 12 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
