Vestas signs deals to supply 4.2 GW of offshore wind turbines in the UK

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has secured agreements to supply 4.2 GW of wind turbines to the Swedish company Vattenfall for its 1,380 MW Norfolk Vanguard West offshore wind complex located off eastern England (United Kingdom).  Vestas will notably supply 92 of its V236-15 MW offshore wind turbines under a preferred supplier agreement for the project.

In addition, the company has also signed exclusivity agreements for the Norfolk Vanguard East and Norfolk Boreas projects, which will have a total installed capacity of 2,760 MW. For the two latter projects, Vestas will potentially supply up to 184 of its V236-15 MW turbines. The deals also include that Vestas will service the projects under long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) service contracts once they are completed.

Vestas will thus replace Germany’s Siemens Gamesa, which was originally named preferred supplier in 2021 for the full Norfolk development. The Norfolk offshore wind complex is expected to be able to power over 4 million British households. The United Kingdom plans to reach 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end-2022).

Moreover, following the announcement of supplier change, Germany's RWE announced that it would acquire the 4.2 GW projects from Vattenfall for GBP963m (€1.1bn). Closing of the transaction is expected in early 2024.
