MunmuBaram, the joint venture (JV) of Shell (80%) and Sweden’s Hexicon (20%), has selected Vestas as the preferred supplier for the 1.3 GW MunmuBaram floating offshore wind project, located off the south-east coast of South Korea. Vestas will supply and install 84 V236-15.0 MW turbines, which will be installed on floating foundations across the 240 km2 project area, in water depths ranging between 120 and 150 metres. The MunmuBaram project, currently in the permitting phase, is expected to generate 4.2 TWh/year.
The South Korean project is Vestas’ third partnership with Shell, following to the 730 MW Borssele offshore wind project in the Netherlands and the Atlantic Shores 1.5 GW offshore wind project in the US, announced in early October 2022 and which will also feature V236-15.0 MW turbines.
At the end of 2021, offshore wind accounted for less than 1% of South Korea’s installed capacity (136 MW), however the country currently has more than 47 GW of wind projects under development. South Korea has set a target to reach 12 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
