Verano Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens to develop its "Los Amigos del Verano" green hydrogen project in in Chile's Taltal commune within the Antofagasta region, with a total capacity of 25 GW. The project's first three phases will each feature two 2.5-GW electrolysis-based hydrogen plants, followed by a fourth phase incorporating four 2.5-GW plants. The renewable energy sources powering the electrolysers are expected to be wind and solar.
The construction timeline anticipates work initiation in 2025, with phase one operational by 2027 and the final phase reaching operational status by 2033. The hydrogen and ammonia produced will be transported through a 100-km pipeline to an offshore storage and distribution facility. The complex will incorporate desalination plants to secure the necessary water for hydrogen production.
