Venture Global will expand its US Plaquemines LNG plant by 18 Mt/year to 45 Mt/year

Venture Global has announced plans for a brownfield expansion of 18 Mt/year at its Plaquemines LNG facility in Louisiana (US). The 27 Mt/year Plaquemines LNG achieved first production of LNG in December 2024, becoming the newest LNG export facility to come online in the United States and Venture’s second LNG facility. The proposed expansion should consist of 24 trains to increase the facility’s capacity by over 18 Mt/year and bring the expected total production capacity to over 45 Mt/year at Plaquemines, representing an investment of approximately US$18bn. The company expects to reach a final investment decision (FID) on the expansion to follow first production at its 20 Mt/year CP2 LNG project, also located in Louisiana, scheduled to enter full operation in 2026.

Venture Global’s total investment in its current and planned US projects is of over US$75bn. Venture Global is a long-term, low-cost provider of US LNG. The company is currently constructing and developing over 100 Mt/year of nameplate production capacity to provide clean, affordable energy to the world. Venture Global is developing CCS projects at each of its LNG facilities.

The US became a net gas exporter in 2017, and exports are increasing rapidly and have more than quadrupled since 2014, reaching 223 bcm in 2023, with LNG making up more than 75% of exported volumes. LNG exports rose by 12% in 2023, driven by strong LNG demand in the EU, which accounted for around two thirds of total US LNG exports. The US LNG export capacities are expected to increase by more than 50% by 2026 and LNG export volumes to double by 2050.
