The Swedish utility Vattenfall has obtained the rights to develop a 980 MW offshore wind project, located in the N-7.2 zone of the German North Sea, after having exercised its right of entry.
The project was originally awarded to Germany’s RWE Renewables in early September 2022, however, Vattenfall held the step-in rights for the N-7.2 zone, which it had to exercise before the end of October 2022 to develop the project. The project is expected to be connected to the German grid in 2027 and be able power more than 1 million German households.
Germany aims to reach 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030, 40 GW by 2035 and 70 GW by 2045. In 2021, the country had 7.7 GW of installed offshore wind capacity.
