Swedish power company Vattenfall has taken a final investment decision (FID) to build a 254 MW/1 GWh battery storage facility in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany (Vattenfall press release, 10/09/2026).
The project will be located on the site of the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power station, where decommissioning work is currently underway. According to the company, the facility will be its largest battery storage project to date and will rank among the largest storage facilities planned in Germany.
“Demand for battery storage is rising rapidly as renewable generation expands. Germany’s transmission system operators expect large-scale battery storage capacity to exceed 80 GW by 2040, reflecting its growing role in integrating renewable electricity and keeping the grid stable”, said the company.
The battery facility and its connection to the 50 Hertz transmission grid are expected to enter operation by the end of 2028. Once operational, the project will almost double Vattenfall’s battery storage capacity. Its existing portfolio consists of 150 MW in operation and 120 MW under construction, with most of the capacity co-located with wind and solar projects.
At the same time, Vattenfall is developing its flexibility optimisation business by managing and marketing battery capacity on behalf of third-party asset owners. By 2029, the company aims to optimise a battery portfolio of up to 1.5 GW.
