Vattenfall, SaskPower (Canada) sign agreement on CCS at Boundary Dam

SaskPower (Canada) and Vattenfall have signed an agreement on carbon capture and storage (CCS) knowledge and technologies. The two power utilities will explore opportunities for collaboration in CCS, including mutual support for the development of CCS projects through technical exchange. Vattenfall has gained significant previous experience in CCS technologies at a pilot scale through several demonstration projects in Germany (including the Schwarze Pumpe pilot plant), the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. SaskPower is developing various CCS projects and will focus on the Boundary Dam project, which is expected to be the first post-combustion CCS project in the world to be installed at the third unit (110 MW) of the Boundary Dam coal-fired power plant in Estevan (Saskatchewan, Canada). The project is expected to save 1 MtCO2/year. It will transport the captured CO2 to nearby oil fields where it will be used for enhanced oil recovery.
