Vattenfall has achieved first power at its 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) offshore wind project located in the Dutch North Sea, about 18-35 km off the coast between the Hague and Zandvoort. The first operating turbines of the project, still in their testing phase, started producing electricity which was transferred to the grid via the Alpha offshore transformation station. So far 33 out of a total of 140 11 MW turbines supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) have been installed. The final investment decision was taken in June 2020 and construction started in July 2021. The plant, owned by Vattenfall (50.5%), BASF (24.3%), and Allianz (25.2%), is scheduled to be fully operational in 2023.
The Swedish energy group was awarded permits for the construction of Hollandse Kust Zuid after winning two subsidy-free tender rounds in 2018 and 2019. The project will be the first fully merchant offshore wind project in the world, receiving no subsidy for its power generation.
