The Swedish power utility Vattenfall has announced plans to expand four hydropower plants in Sweden, adding a total new capacity of up to 720 MW. These expansions, for which feasibility studies have already begun to prepare future planned investment decisions, can be built starting in 2026 and into the 2030s.
A feasibility study is underway to restore the Juktan power station, Västerbotten, into a pumped-storage power plant, with a potential of up to 380 MW. Investment decisions are planned for 2027 and commercial operations from 2031. At the Porju's power station, Norrbotten, Vattenfall plans to increase water flow and production, with a potential of up to 80 MW. Investment decisions are planned for 2026 and commercial operations for before 2031. At the Harsprånget power station (Norrbotten), Vattenfall plans to renew and re-operate a unit that is currently mothballed for a potential of up to 110 MW. Investment decisions are planned for 2024 and commercial operations for 2026. Finally, at the Messaure power station (Norrbotten), a fourth unit is planned, with a capacity of up to 150 MW. Investment decisions are planned for 2028 and commercial operations for 2032.
Vattenfall currently has about 8.5 GW of installed hydropower capacity. In 2021, hydro represented 36% of Sweden’s installed capacity with 16.3 GW, and 43% of its power generation with nearly 74 TWh.
