Vattenfall has obtained an irrevocable permit for the construction of the 630 MW Nordlicht II offshore wind project issued by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) (Vattenfall press release, 13/01/2026). The irrevocable permit allows Vattenfall to confirm the Final Investment Decision (FID) it had taken on the second park of the cluster and move ahead with its construction.
The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster, composed by the 980 MW Nordlicht I and the 630 MW Nordlicht II, is expected to start construction works in 2026, with the Nordlicht I turbines to be installed in 2027 and the Nordlicht II turbines in 2028. The wind parks are slated to be fully operational in 2028.
Germany had a total installed capacity of 257 GW (end of 2024), of which offshore wind represented almost 9 GW. The country targets 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045.
