The Swedish energy group Vattenfall has submitted an environmental permit application for the proposed construction of the 2.9 GW Storlandet onshore wind park in northern Sweden. The submission, which includes a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), was filed with the Land and Environmental Court at the Umeå District Court. According to Vattenfall, the wind park could produce around 9 TWh/year of electricity, helping to meet the growing demand from the mining and steel industries in the region. An environmental permit can only be granted if the local municipality gives its approval — a process that could take up to three years.
As of the end of 2024, onshore wind accounted for nearly 32% of Sweden’s total installed power generation capacity (17 GW and 53 GW, respectively).
