Vattenfall completes construction of a 1.5 GW wind park in the Netherlands

The Swedish energy group Vattenfall has announced the completion of construction of the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) offshore wind park, located off the coast of the Netherlands, with the installation of the last wind turbine. The wind park comprises 139 turbines of 11 MW supplied by Siemens Gamesa. The total number of turbines is one less than the 140 that were originally planned, due to a foundation being damaged after a collision with a bulk carrier.

Over the next months, the turbines will be commissioned and tested, and the Hollandse Kust Zuid project is expected to be officially opened later in 2023. Vattenfall achieved first power for the wind park in August 2022. The final investment decision was taken in June 2020 and construction started in July 2021. The plant is owned by Vattenfall (50.5%), BASF (24.3%), and Allianz (25.2%).

Vattenfall was awarded permits for the construction of Hollandse Kust Zuid after winning two subsidy-free tender rounds in 2018 and 2019. The project is the first fully merchant offshore wind project in the world, receiving no subsidy for its power generation.
