Vattenfall and partners inaugurate the 1.5 GW HKZ wind park (Netherlands)

The Dutch Government, Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz have inaugurated the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) wind power plant, located in the Netherland’s North Sea, off the towns of Scheveningen and Zandvoort. The wind park comprises 139 turbines of 11 MW supplied by Siemens Gamesa, which will generate enough power to supply 1.5 million households. Hollandse Kust Zuid is expected to be fully operational in 2024.

The power plant is owned by Vattenfall (50.5%), BASF (24.3%), and Allianz (25.2%). Vattenfall was awarded permits for the construction of Hollandse Kust Zuid after winning two subsidy-free tender rounds in 2018 and 2019. The final investment decision on the project was taken in June 2020, construction started in July 2021 and was completed in June 2023.

The project is the first fully merchant offshore wind project in the world, receiving no subsidy for its power generation.
