Uzbekistan has signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with the Saudi company ACWA Power and the United Arab Emirates’ AMEA Power for two wind power projects totalling 6 GW and both located in the Kungirot region of Karakalpakstan (western Uzbekistan).
ACWA Power has signed a PPA with the Uzbek Ministry of Energy as part of a project to build the 5 GW Aral project. The US$6.2bn project is expected to produce 17.5 TWh/year of electricity and offset emissions by 7.4 MtCO2/year. The Ministry has also signed a PPA with AMEA Power for a 1 GW wind project worth US$1.1bn that will produce 3.5 TWh/year and offset emissions by 1.48 MtCO2/year once completed.
Uzbekistan aims to reach 27 GW of renewable energy capacity and 40% of electricity production from renewables by 2030. The country currently has 1.1 GW of wind capacity under construction and 4.6 GW under development.
