Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy has reached a financial close for the 500 MW Zarafshan onshore wind farm project, located in the Navoiy region (central Uzbekistan). The farm will be built by the United Arab Emirate company Masdar and is expected to come into commercial operation by the end of 2024.
According to the country’s Ministry of Energy, once completed, the wind farm will be able to power 500,000 households and reduce carbon emissions by 1.1 MtCO2/year. The project is expected to attract more than US$600m in foreign direct investment.
In 2021, Uzbekistan had only 1 MW of installed wind capacity (and 104 MW for solar). Nonetheless, in its updated NDC (2021), Uzbekistan plans to build 5 GW of solar, 3 GW of wind, and 1.9 GW of hydropower capacities by 2030 to cover 25% of the power mix (up from 10% in 2019). The country also plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
