Uzbekistan’s Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy (Uzatom) has approved a site layout scheme for the construction of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear power plant in the country. The project will thus be implemented in the Farish district of the Jizzakh region, in central Uzbekistan. The SMR will be developed in cooperation with Atomstroyexport, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned nuclear company Rosatom.
In May 2024, Uzbekistan and Russia agreed on the construction of a small nuclear power plant with a total capacity of 330 MW. It would comprise six RITM-200N pressurised water reactors (PWRs) rated 55 MWe and 190 MWth each, derived from technologies used on Russian nuclear icebreakers, with an expected lifetime of 60 years. In September 2024, Uzatom had signed a protocol with Atomstroyexport on the start of work on the design of the SMR. Preparatory works on the buildings required to support construction and administration of the project began in April 2025. First commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2029.
