Uzatom and Rosatom launch work on SMR nuclear project in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s Atomic Energy Agency, Uzatom, has signed a protocol with Rosatom’s Engineering Division, Atomstroyexport, on the start of work on the design of a small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan. This marks the start of the active phase of preparatory work at the construction site, the development of design and licensing documentation.

The initial contract was signed by Russia and Uzbekistan in May 2024 for the construction of a 330 MW SMR. The power plant will comprise six units with RITM-200N water-cooled reactors. The 55 MWe (190 MWt) reactors will have a service life of 60 years and the first unit is expected to be commissioned in late 2029.

Uzbekistan does not yet possess nuclear capacity. However, the country released its “Nuclear Development plan 2019 - 2029” in which it plans to build a nuclear power plant comprising 2 VVER-1200 reactors with a capacity of 1.2 GW each. In July 2022, Rosatom had also signed an MoU with the Uzbek government to develop nuclear infrastructure in the country, notably SMRs.
