Utilitas launches study for a 1.2 GW offshore wind project (Estonia)

The Estonian energy group Utilitas Wind has contracted the Danish engineering company Ramboll for a pre-FEED study for its 1.2 GW Saare-Liivi offshore wind project phase 1, which is planned to be built in the gulf of Riga, 10 km off the Estonian island of Kihnu.

Ramboll will analyse the technical solutions for the wind park, study the technical and economic feasibility of the project and support the environmental impact assessment process. The study will be completed by January 2023.

The first phase of the project will consist of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 15 MW and is expected to generate around 5 TWh/year of power. Utilitas Wind expects to obtain the necessary permits to begin construction by 2025 and expects the project to start producing clean electricity by 2028. Estonia’s Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Agency (CPTRA), which manages the state consent process, initiated the building permit procedure at the end of 2021.
