The US nuclear company Westinghouse has announced that China had given approval to the group to supply four nuclear reactors for two separate Chinese nuclear power plants projects located in southern China.
China's State Council has approved the construction of two Westinghouse AP-1000 reactors for the Bailong nuclear power project, owned by the country's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), in the Guangxi province. China's State Council also approved two additional AP-1000 reactors for the Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant, located in Guangdong and owned by China General Nuclear Power Corporation.
Westinghouse said the approval brings the total number of operational and approved reactors based on AP-1000 technology in China to 16.
In August 2024, China’s State Council has approved 11 new nuclear reactors to be built across five sites across China, including the Bailong and Lufeng nuclear projects.
At the end of 2023, China’s nuclear capacity reached 56.9 GW (with 56 operational reactors) and its nuclear power generation reached nearly 435 TWh (around 5% of the power mix). China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035. The country currently has over 32 GW of nuclear capacity under construction and 172 GW under development.
