US utilities move ahead with contracts for offshore wind projects

US energy utilities National Grid, Unitil and Eversource Energy have submitted plans to the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (United States) for the development of up to 800 MW of offshore wind capacities.

The companies have asked state regulators to approve a draft plan to solicit bids for 15-to-20 year offshore wind energy contracts, to comply with a 2016 law, requesting the three utilities to buy a combined 1,600 MW of offshore wind power over a ten-year period, as Massachusetts awarded offshore leases to DONG Energy, Deepwater Wind and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partner in late 2016.

Offshore wind is still gaining momentum in the United States, despite the new US administration's energy strategy. In March 2017, the US BOEM (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) selected Avangrid (Iberdrola) for the building of an offshore wind farm off the coast of North Carolina.
