The US unveils a new NDC targeting an emissions reduction of 61-66% by 2035

The United States have unveiled a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which sets a new emissions reduction target to 2035. In this new NDC, the US is communicating an economy-wide target of reducing its net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 61% and 66% in 2035, compared to 2005 levels.

The US’ previous NDC, submitted in 2021, did not set an emissions reduction target for 2035, but for 2030. It set an economy-wide target of reducing net GHG emissions between 50% and 52% in 2030, compared to 2005 levels. This previous target is still active.

The US’ greenhouse gas emissions reached 6,587 MtCO2eq in 2005, according to the country’s NDC. The US’ 2035 target would bring emissions down to between 2,240 MtCO2eq and 2,569 MtCO2eq, while the 2030 target would bring emissions down to between 3,162 MtCO2eq and 3,293 MtCO2eq.

The new NDC also reiterates the US’ commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
