US Supreme Court blocks Clean Power Plan

The US Supreme Court has put on hold the Clean Power Plan, as requested by 27 states (including coal producer West Virginia or oil producer Texas) and various companies claiming that these federal regulations would have a devastating impact on their economies. The court battle over their legality will suspend the implementation of the Clean Power Plan.

The Clean Power Plan proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the power sector by 32% by 2030 from 2005 levels, corresponding to an 870 Mt reduction in emissions. This would be the first national constraint on CO2 emissions for the power sector, which accounts for around 1/3 of all carbon pollution emissions. The Clean Power Plan aims to cut SOx emissions from power plants by 90% and those of NOx by 72% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. Each state will have an emission reduction target and will have to submit a proposal to the EPA on measures to reach it.
