The governorate of the US state of Rhode Island has signed a bill seeking to procure the state between 600 MW and 1 GW of offshore wind capacity. The state’s primary utility company, Rhode Island Energy, will be required to open the market competitive procurement process by 15 October 2022.
The addition of these offshore wind capacities will have the potential to meet at least 30% of Rhode Island’s estimated 2030 electricity demand. Two other offshore wind projects are already being developed in the state: the 30 MW Block Island wind farm and the 400 MW Revolution wind project. Rhode Island is targeting 100% of power generation from renewables by 2033.
This bill will also contribute to the current US administration’s objectives to tackle climate change and further the energy transition, as the United States have confirmed they target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (only 42 MW in 2021).
