US solar PV capacity surpasses 20 GW mark

According to the US Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), total operational solar PV capacity in the United States exceeded the 20 GW level in the first half of 2015. More than 1,390 MW of solar PV capacities were installed in the second quarter of 2015 (compared to 1,329 MW installed in the first quarter of 2015 and 1,282 MW installed in the second quarter of 2014).

The highest growth was observed in the residential market, with 473 MW installed (+70% year-on-year), while installations fell by 33% year-on-year in the non-residential market. A total of 729 MW of utility-scale solar PV came online in the second quarter of 2015, representing 52% of quarterly additions.

In addition, more than 5 GW of utility-scale capacity is currently under construction, to benefit from the federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) scheduled to end at the end of 2016. The United States is on pace for installing a record-breaking 7.7 GW in 2015. In the first half of 2015, 40% of all new power capacities commissioned were solar.
