The US signs agreement to develop a 1.2 GW nuclear unit in Slovakia

The United States has signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to promote the development of Slovakia’s nuclear energy programme and develop a 1.2 GW nuclear unit at the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant (US government press release, 16/01/2026). The deal is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between both countries, strengthening European energy security and diversify Slovakia’s energy supply

The deal is expected to advance the US’ energy leadership, to reinforce the US supply chains and expand access to global markets for US-made nuclear technology. It is also expected to support Slovakia’s transition away from reliance on Russian-designed reactors.

Slovakia’s capacity stood at 7.8 GW at the end of 2024 of which 26% came from nuclear sources (2 GW), according to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research. In 2024, over 60% of the power generation was nuclear.
