The US releases its first national strategy and roadmap for clean hydrogen

The US Administration has released the final version of its “US National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap”, a comprehensive framework aimed at accelerating the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen in the United States. It is the country’s first clean hydrogen roadmap.

The final strategy outlines strategic opportunities for the production of green hydrogen and targets 10 Mt/year by 2030, 20 Mt/year by 2040 and 50 Mt/year by 2050. The roadmap sets three key focus points for the development and adoption of clean hydrogen: targeting strategic, high impact uses for clean hydrogen; reducing the cost of clean hydrogen; and focusing on regional networks and clean hydrogen hubs.

The national strategy notably plans to enable electrolysis-based production at US$2/kg in the period 2026-2029 and at US$1/kg in 2030-2035, as well as a multi-gigawatt-scale domestic electrolyser manufacturing capacity in the second half of the 2020 decade.

The strategy will be financed thanks to the US$9.5bn investment for clean hydrogen pledged in the US Administration’s Infrastructure Law, passed in 2021. The US plans on achieving a carbon-free grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
