The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved a series of licensing and regulatory actions from US-based Holtec International that will pave the way for restarting the 800 MW Palisades Nuclear Plant, located in Michigan (United States).
The pressurized-water reactor ceased operations in May 2022 under a different ower. In late 2023, Holtec began filing licensing and regulatory requests to support returning the plant to operational status. While these NRC approvals will allow Holtec to load fuel, there are still several licensing actions under NRC review and additional requirements that need to be met before the plant can start up under the original operating license, which would expire 24 March 2031.
Holtec also plans to install two small modular reactors (SMRs), based on existing light water reactor (LWR) technology, at the same facility. The company did not give a start-up date but in March 2025, Holtec expects to reopen the plant in the fourth quarter of 2025.
