US regulator approves commissioning of Freeport LNG first train

The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the commissioning of the first liquefaction train of the Freeport LNG project in Texas (United States), which is currently under construction and expected to enter in service between September 2019 and May 2020. The project's startup date was delayed in April 2018 due to the Harvey hurricane which flooded equipment lay-yards.

The Freeport LNG terminal initial project includes three liquefaction trains of 5 Mt/year each (cumulated capacity of 15 Mt/year) and the second and third trains are expected to enter service between September 2019, and May 2020 as well after the commissioning of the first train.

So far, the capacity from the first three liquefaction trains has already been contracted under several LNG supply agreements with several buyers such as Osaka Gas, JERA (the joint venture of Japanese companies TEPCO and Chubu Electric), BP, Toshiba and SK E&S LNG. A fourth 5 Mt/year LNG train is under consideration and could be commissioned in 2023-2024.
