The US Presidency signs executive order to boost the US coal industry

The US Presidency has signed an executive order to boost the US coal industry. The decision sets to remove Federal regulatory barriers to coal production, encourage the utilisation of coal to meet the US’ domestic energy demands, increase US coal exports, and ensure that Federal policy does not hinder coal production or coal-fired power generation. The order notably allows some older coal-fired power plants set for retirement to keep producing electricity to meet demand.

According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), the announcement includes five key initiatives : the reinstatement of the National Coal Council; facilitating new investment in coal-fired power generation; the designation of steelmaking coal as a critical material and mineral; the deployment of mineral extraction technology from coal ash; and the commercialization of coal ash conversion technologies.
