US energy group DTE Energy plans to cut its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and by 80% by 2040, by adding more renewable generation capacity, increasing energy efficiency for its customers and retiring coal-fired power plants sooner than previously announced.
The group plans to accelerate its coal-fired power plant retirement programme: it will close the 1,378 MW St. Clair power plant and the 535 MW Trenton Channel power plant in 2022 instead of 2023. The 358 MW River Rouge power plant will also be retired in 2022. In addition, DTE Energy will invest US$2bn in renewables by 2024, to more than double its renewable installed capacity by 2024 and to quadruple it by 2040. More particularly, the group will invest US$800m in upgrading its Ludington pumped-storage hydropower plant by 2020. Finally, DTE will target annual energy savings of 1.75% within its service area, above the state's requirement.
DTE Energy is based in Detroit and its electric utility subsidiary serves 2.2 million customers in Southeastern Michigan, while its gas utility affiliate serves 1.3 million customers in Michigan. The company has a total installed capacity of 11 GW, comprising gas-fired and coal-fired power plants, the Fermi-2 nuclear power plant, hydropower pumped-storage and other renewable energy sources.
