The US Government has announced its intentions to withdraw federal permitting for the 1.2 GW SouthCoast Wind project off Nantucket, Massachusetts (United States). The wind project is undergoing a litigation raised by the municipality of Nantucket against the project’s permit to construct and operate the project. Considering that the challenge against the project would be redundant, the US Department of Justice (US DOJ) asked a federal court to pause Nantucket’s appeal arguing that it plans to demand the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to reconsider the permit before 18 September 2025. If the court denies the US DOJ request, the appeal will proceed.
Formerly known as Mayflower Wind, the SouthCoast Wind is being developed by Ocean Winds North America (a JV between EDP Renewables and Engie) off the coast of the US States of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with plans to install up to 141 wind turbines and five substation platforms. The US BOEM gave its approval for the construction and operation of the project in January 2025, with Ocean Winds expecting to start construction in 2025.
