US onshore wind projects installation costs decreased to US$1,611/kW

According to new figures released by the United States Department of Energy (DoE), the cost of installing new onshore wind projects has decreased by 33% between the peak in 2009-2010 and 2017 to US$1,611/kW. A total of 7,017 MW were installed in the country in 2017, which brings the cumulated utility-scale wind capacity to nearly 89 GW spread across 41 states.

Texas is the country's leader with over 22 GW of installed wind capacity, followed by Oklahoma, Iowa, California, and Kansas, all of them having more than 5 GW. Wind energy contributed to 6.3% of the domestic power supply and more than 10% of the total power generation figures in 14 states, and even more than 30% in 4 states, namely Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

The performance of wind turbines built in the last few years has increased by 79% compared with projects installed from 1998 to 2001.
