US oil refineries reached a new production record in 2018

According to the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), US refineries processed 17.3 mb/d in average throughout 2018, the highest annual average on record and the 5th consecutive year of record-high refininery runs. The domestic refinery utilisation rate averaged 93.2% in 2018, an increase of about 2.1% from 2017.

This level was reached mainly due to refinery operations in the Gulf Coast and Midwest regions. More than half of US refining capacity is located in the Gulf Coast region, where about 9.2 mb/d were processed in 2018 (8% higher than the previous 5-year average); this was the first time that the region's annual average surpassed the 9 mb/d threshold. In the Midwest - the second-highest refining capacity - refineries delivered an average of 3.8 mb/d in 2018, which is 6% higher than the previous 5-year average.
