US nuclear watchdog renews license for 759 MW Robinson nuclear power plant

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operation license of the 759 MW Robinson nuclear power plant in South Carolina, United States (Duke Energy press release, 23/04/2026). The new license should allow the power plant, operated by Duke Energy, to continue operating for an additional 20 years, extending its service until 2050

The Robinson nuclear power plant started operations in 1970, making it one of the first commercial nuclear power plant in the Southeast. The original license of the project was extended for 20 years (until 2030) and it has undergone equipment upgrades with a value of approximately USD1.7bn to ensure its lifetime extension. The facility can generate enough energy to power up approximately 570,000 homes

Duke Energy plans to submit all its 11 operating nuclear units for license renewal, with the Robinson being Duke’s second nuclear facility to obtain its license renewal (after the 2.6 GW Oconee NPP in 2025).
