According to the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), 74 of the 100 operational nuclear reactors in the United States (about 69 GW) have been granted a 20-year licence renewal, allowing them to operate for a total period of 60 years. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently reviewing license renewal applications for a further 17 reactors and plans to receive the remaining seven applications in the next few years. However, nearly all existing nuclear reactors in the United States will be more than 60-year old by 2050 and will require a Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) to continue operating. So far, no applications for a SLR have been submitted but many operators are considering it, such as Dominion Resources for two units at its Surry power plant in Virginia (current license expiration in 2032 and 2033) or Exelon for two of its Peach Bottom Atomic power plant in Pennsylvania (current license expiration in 2033 and 2034).
