US NRC resumes nuclear plant license renewal (United States)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has resumed issuing license renewals for nuclear power plants, with the renewal of the Limerick nuclear plant's operating license. The NRC has suspended actions related to issuing license renewals as well as new operating licenses in August 2012, after the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit struck down some provisions of NRC's Waste Confidence Rule, following the termination of the Yucca Mountain repository programme.

The NRC is now reviewing license renewal applications for 17 reactors and will receive new license renewal applications from seven additional reactors between 2015 and 2018.
