US natural gas production stagnated in 2024 (+11 mcm/d)

The US EIA has reported that US natural gas production levels in 2024 saw a marginal increase of 11 mcm/d to reach 3.2 bcm/d in 2024. The Permian region (Texas and New Mexico) recorded the highest growth rate of gas production (+12% or 76 mcm/d), reaching an average of about 720 mcm/d. Natural gas production in this region is a byproduct of oil production, and it represented a 22% of the country’s total natural gas production.

The most prolific region is the Appalachia region of the Northeast, representing about 31% of the country’s production with 1 bcm/d. However, the region’s production has been declining due to limited pipeline takeaway capacity.

The Haynesville region (Louisiana and Texas) registered a production of 413 mcm/d, marking an 11% decrease (compared to its 2023 annual average) explained by historically low natural gas prices that reduced rig activity in the area due to the high costs of drilling wells in its deeper terrain.

Together, all three regions produce about two-thirds of the country’s natural gas production.
