The US finalises new energy efficiency standards for residential gas furnaces

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has finalised new energy efficiency standards for residential gas furnaces that will reduce household utility costs by US$1.5bn/year and contribute to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These standards, which will take effect in late 2028, require non-weatherized gas furnaces and those used in mobile homes to achieve an annual fuel utilization efficiency of 95%, conserving energy and improving residential heating. The DOE expects these standards to cumulatively save consumers US$24.8bn on their energy bills over 30 years, as well as cut CO2 emissions by 332 MtCO2 and methane emissions by 4.3 Mt.

Furnace efficiency standards were last updated in 2007. As of 2022, residential gas furnaces accounted for approximately 19% of annual residential energy use in the United States.
