US Fermi partners with Texas Tech University to launch 11 GW AI-powered energy campus

US energy company Fermi America has filed a federal application to develop an energy and data complex in Texas powered by nuclear, natural gas, and solar energy. The project, named Hypergrid, is being developed in partnership with Texas Tech University and is set to launch on July 4.

The campus is expected to eventually deliver up to 11 GW of combined nuclear, gas, and solar power, enough to supply over 8.2 million homes, with 1 GW anticipated to come online by late 2026. The complex will also house large natural gas plants, supported by local pipeline infrastructure, to provide energy to AI companies.

This announcement comes in the wake of a May 2025 executive order by the U.S. President, instructing the Department of Energy to classify AI data centers and the nuclear reactors that power them as critical defense infrastructure.
