US FERC cancels preliminary permit for 2.1 GW pumped storage project in Arizona

The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has cancelled the preliminary permit for the 2.1 GW Montezuma pumped-storage hydropower project (P-14989), proposed by the US developer Pumped Hydro Storage LLC in the Pinal and Maricopa counties in the US State of Arizona. The preliminary permit was issued on April 2020 to study the feasibility of the pumped storage project requiring the submission of a progress report at the close of each 12-month period from the effective date of the permit. The company had failed to file its second and third progress report.

The Montezuma Pumped Storage project planned the construction of new upper and lower reservoirs in the Sierra Estrella Mountains in Arizona (US). The project also included the construction of an underground powerhouse with six 350 MW pump-turbine generators, two 500 kV transmission lines, a 500 kV substation, an overflow tank, among other projects. The estimated power generation of the project was of 3.5 TWh/year.
