US Federal Government targets 40% cut in GHG emissions by 2025

The US President has issued an executive order aimed at cutting the Federal Government’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2025 from 2008 levels and at increasing the share of renewables in the electricity consumed by the Federal Government consumes to 30% by this date. By 2025, federal agencies will have to cover 25% of their total energy consumption (thermal and electric) with renewable sources, to reduce their energy consumption in federal buildings by 2.5%/year between 2015 and 2025. They will also have to reduce their GHG emissions in transport (-30% in emissions per mile from 2014 levels by 2025) and to raise the share of hybrid vehicles and zero-emissions vehicles in federal fleets.

These two measures are expected to reduce GHG emissions by 26 Mt by 2025 (compared to 2008 levels) and support the US commitment to reduce net GHG emissions by 26%-28% below 2005 levels by 2025 (announced in November 2014).
