US exports of petroleum products increased by 7% in 2018

According to the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), exports of domestic petroleum total petroleum products reached an annual average of 5.6 mb/d in 2018, which is about 366,000 bbl/d more than in 2017 (+7%). Petroleum products export increase for the sixteenth consecutive year. The EIA reports that most of them were distillate, propane, and motor gasoline, all of which reached record highs in 2018. This trend follows the crude oil production increase and the rise of gross inputs into refineries. Distillate remains the most exported petroleum product in 2018 (25% of the total) and averaged 1.3 mb/d.

The EIA also estimates that US exports of crude oil neardly doubled in 2018, from 1.2 mb/d in 2017 to 2 mb/d in 2018. The primary driver behind rising exports is the increase of the domestic crude oul output (+17% in 2018) to an average of 10.9 mb/d. Most of the increase in production is related to the Gulf Coast states (7.1 mb/d, i.e. 65% of domestic production), the departure point for more than 90% of U.S. crude oil exports.
