US energy-related CO2 emissions decreased by 3% during 2023

According to the US EIA's US Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions report, the country’s energy-related CO2 emissions decreased by 3% in 2023. Over 80% of the emissions reductions occurred in the electric power sector, due to a lower coal-fired power generation, which was displaced by an increased power generation from solar and natural gas. The change in the generation mix away from coal decreased electric power sector CO2 emissions by 7% compared to 2022. CO2 emissions also decreased in the residential and commercial sectors by a combined 6% in 2023 (561 Mt), due to milder weather leading to less energy demand for space heating and cooling in buildings, while CO2 emissions from the industrial and transportation sectors remained relatively unchanged, with differences of less than 1% from 2022.

The US targets a 50-52% reduction in GHG emissions in 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
