According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), US net electricity generation reached a record high in 2025 (EIA press release, 05/03/2026). In 2025, the United States generated 4,430 TWh of electricity, an increase of 2.8% compared with 2024, which had previously been the highest annual total in the EIA’s dataset dating back to 1949.
“This growth contrasts with the trend of relatively flat electricity generation between the mid-2000s and early 2020s. Net generation is related to electricity demand. Much of the recent growth in electricity demand comes from the commercial sector, which includes data centers, and the industrial sector, which includes manufacturing establishments,” according to the press release.
In 2025, US retail electricity sales to final customers increased compared with 2024 across all three sectors: residential (+2.2%), commercial (by 2.9%), and industrial (by 0.7%).
The EIA expects electricity generation, driven by rising demand, to continue growing in 2026 and 2027.
