According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), energy consumption in the United States is expected to increase through 2050, as economic growth and population should outpace energy efficiency gains. Oil products are expected to remain the most consumed energy (mostly consumed in the transport sector) but gas consumption should continue to grow due to low gas prices and gas should remain the second most consumed energy. However, the largest increase in consumption should occur for renewables: the share of renewable power generation will increase rapidly, supported by state and federal policies and falling technology costs, increasing their competitiveness in the electricity market.
The US EIA also expects US fossil fuel exports to remain steady through 2050. US gas exports will increase due to the development of gas liquefaction capacities, rising global gas demand and gas pipeline exports to Mexico and Canada, while US crude oil export should remain near their projected peak.
